Building a Base for your Garden Room
Bases for your Garden Room
Why do I need a base for my garden room?
A base gives your garden room a solid, level foundation that will protect it against future issues such as windows or doors dropping out of alignment or water leaking in. That’s why it’s always important to install an approved base before your garden room is constructed. Assembling your garden room on an incorrect base can invalidate any warranty provided with your building, so check with your supplier before constructing your base.
Where should I place the base?
Before installing your garden room base there are a few points to consider. Leave space around boundary walls, fences and any other buildings to give enough clearance for your new garden room.
Also remember to allow for any roof overhang your building may have as this usually extends past the base and would require more room. A typical roof overhang is usually a few inches plus any extra if canopies are added onto the room. Furthermore, you’ll need to access all points of the building to apply wood treatments or preservatives, so be sure to account for this too.
Overhanging branches from trees or large bushes can cause problems for your garden room, so it might be worth removing or cutting these back prior to assembly. You’ll need to regularly check overhanging foliage moving forwards too, as any rubbing on the roofing material could cause damage and water leakage, as well as voiding your warranty.
The best location for your garden room base also depends on what the room will be used for. If you plan to have a lot of bulky/ heavy equipment inside it, it would be best placed in an area that’s easy to access. Or, if you plan to use it to relax and soak up the sun you’ll want to position it where it catches the most rays.
Finally, if you intend to fit electricity or water supplies to your garden room, the location will need to be suitable for this too.
